UnitedHealth Wins First OK of Prosthetic Device Class Settlement

UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. will reprocess claims for prosthetic devices and change how it handles the claims after a federal court granted preliminary approval to a class settlement July 19.

The deal resolves a 1,000-person class action accusing the insurer of Employee Retirement Income Security Act violations.

The deal requires UnitedHealthcare to be more specific when it declines to cover a patient’s requested prosthetic device, and to provide information about how coverage might be available in the future.
