Major League Baseball Must Face Trade Secret, Contract Claims

Major League Baseball will face claims that it stole trade secrets and violated a contract when it developed its own system to track pitch data, a federal district court decided Thursday, denying arbitration and a motion to dismiss.

PITCHf/x, created by Sportvision Inc., is a program used to track detailed information about a ball pitched in a baseball game. Using camera-based technology, the system can derive location, angle, and speed, and predict the location of a pitch before it crosses home plate, a suit filed in New York said.
