ICE Detainees Vulnerable to Covid-19 Denied Speedy Bail Hearings

ICE detainees in Maryland who say they are at increased risk of severe Covid-19 complications have been denied expedited bail hearings by a federal district court in the state.

The “determination is not a permanent one,” however. Judge Theodore D. Chuang, writing for the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, said he will revisit the need for expedited bail hearings if necessary.

Chuang said that Howard County Detention Center must maintain and improve upon existing precautions and “follow through and complete vaccinations of all detainees who agree to have one,” if it wants to avoid revisiting the issue....
