FedEx $13.3M Deal on Drivers’ Classification Suit Gets Early OK

A $13.325 million deal between FedEx Ground Package System Inc. and a class of drivers who claimed they were misclassified as independent contractors to prevent them from obtaining benefits got preliminary approval from a federal judge in Indiana.

The ruling, issued Sept. 5 by Judge Robert L. Miller, is one of the final steps to end a portion of a larger consolidated lawsuit filed in 2004 under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act by pickup and delivery drivers against FedEx.

If the court grants final approval, $4.5 million of the settlement would be allocated to resolve claims for life insurance...
