Class Action Over $1-a-Day Immigrant Detainee Pay Heads to Trial

A case over whether it is legal under state minimum wage law to pay immigrant detainees $1 a day for work performed while in detention will proceed to trial after neither side convinced a federal court to rule in their favor.

A jury will have to determine whether detainees at the Northwest ICE Processing Center, formerly called the Northwest Detention Center, in Tacoma, Wash., qualify as employees under the state’s minimum wage law, Judge Robert J. Bryan of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington said in denying summary judgment to both parties.
