Big Heart Faces Trimmed Consumer Suit Over Dog Food Marketing

Big Heart Pet Brands Inc. got claims trimmed in a proposed class suit alleging it deceptively marketed dog food as healthful despite the presence of pentobarbital, a barbiturate that can be used as a euthanasia drug, a federal court in California said.

But the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California declined to throw out the entire suit.

The plaintiffs challenged statements on the company’s website, as well as a label statement touting the dog food as “100% Complete and Balanced Nutrition,” the court said.
