Anthem Sued Over Liposuction Coverage

Anthem Inc. systematically denies coverage for liposuction surgery aimed at treating a rare, chronic condition called lipedema, a proposed class action alleges.

The Jan. 17 lawsuit accuses Anthem of wrongly treating these surgeries as cosmetic procedures not covered by its health plans. The surgery is medically necessary for patients with lipedema, the lawsuit claims, because it’s the only way to treat the pain, mobility problems, and joint disorders associated with the condition.

The lawsuit was filed by a woman who paid out-of-pocket for the surgery after Anthem denied her claim. She brings claims under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act ...
