Welcome to Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call, a daily rundown of the top news for lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel.
- Migrant children’s lawyers say the government wants privileged case data. Legal aid groups representing unaccompanied minors have gone unpaid for months while the Trump administration pushes for client-specific information, including immigration identification numbers, as a condition for reimbursement. Advocates say the demand could expose confidential case details and weaken children’s defenses at the same time immigration courts are accelerating deportation proceedings. (Jacobin)
- AI is entering jury selection. Lawyers in Florida are using tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, along with specialized software, to analyze juror answers, generate profiles, and suggest follow-up questions during voir dire. Supporters say the technology helps spot patterns lawyers might miss, but critics and the ABA warn that opaque systems could embed unlawful bias into decisions about which jurors to strike. - An Ohio lawyer was permanently disbarred after stealing estate funds. Nathan Harvey lost his law license after pleading guilty to theft by deception in a scheme that drained more than $225,000 from an estate he administered. The Ohio Supreme Court said the case was unusual because the misconduct began while Harvey was still a law student and continued until after he had been admitted to practice. (ABA Journal)
