UnitedHealthcare’s Battle With Urinalysis Labs Moves Forward

A lawsuit between UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. and a group of toxicology labs is moving forward after a federal judge in the Western District of Texas declined to dismiss claims by both sides.

The dispute involves laboratory urine testing services for patients covered by United health plans. Mission Toxicology LLC and other testing labs say United wrongly failed to pay about $50 million in claims for urinalysis testing. But according to United, the labs are running a $40 million fraud scheme using rural hospitals as a “front” to boost reimbursement rates.
