Parents Push Education Department on Digital Tools’ Data Privacy

Parents concerned about data that digital learning tools collect on their children are pushing the U.S. Department of Education for disclosure of student records and stronger oversight of technology used in schools.

The parents say they worry that schools aren’t paying enough attention to privacy concerns associated with so-called educational technology, or edtech, from companies such as Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Zoom Video Communications Inc. Districts also don’t understand how federal student records rules apply to such technology, the parents say.
