Legal Operations Helps Firms Measure Effectiveness

July 27, 2018, 5:18 PM

The field of legal operations has experienced “enormous growth” over the past decade, but figuring out how to measure success remains a challenge, according to Reese Arrowsmith, vice president and head of legal operations for Campbell Soup Co.

In a previous role as a consultant, Arrowsmith looked at a bloc of similar legal work being done for a client by several different law firms and examining the minimum, maximum and average; outside counsel spend; settlement cost; and total case cost by firm and geography.

“There was a stark difference between the results, the total case costs of one firm versus another, and we set out on a path to actually start engaging the firms that were getting us better total case cost,” Arrowsmith told Bloomberg Law on June 12 at the Association of Corporate Counsel Legal Operations conference in Chicago. “Even though people aren’t doing that yet, that’s the kind of thing we need to challenge the mindset to start doing.”
