Feb. 3, 2016, 5:29 PM

Greenberg Traurig confirmed on Wednesday that it is in preliminary discussions to combine with the London-based law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner.

Miami-founded Greenberg Traurig has about 1,950 lawyers in 38 offices, while Berwin Leighton has more than 800 lawyers in 12 international offices, according to the firm’s website.

A combination of the two firms would result in a firm with more than 2,500 lawyers, including nearly 750 in New York and London, according to a Greenberg Traurig release.

Both firms specialize in real estate sector, and a union would expand both of the firms’ practices in other areas as well, including in corporate finance, M&A, private equity, litigation, media and entertainment, technology, energy and natural resources.

Greenberg Traurig said that senior leadership is “working to assess the merits of this opportunity over the coming months and, if it moves forward, it will share more information.”

In its own release, Berwin Leighton said that any merger would be subject to a partner vote. Lisa Mayhew, managing partner of Berwin Leighton, said that the firm has always been “hungry to explore opportunities that will improve the quality and breadth of our service to clients.”
