Google, Facebook Demand More Ambitious Clean Energy Goal from EU

Some of the world’s biggest companies, including Microsoft Corp. and Facebook Inc., called on European Union politicians to set a renewable energy target of at least 35 percent by 2030.

An open letter signed by more than 50 multinationals Dec. 13 said a higher renewable energy target by the bloc would enable them and other companies to purchase more clean energy for their operations.

The letter, also backed by Amazon.com Inc. and Unilever NV, was published ahead of a European Union Energy Council meeting on Dec. 18 and Dec. 19, which will discuss the bloc’s post-2020 Renewable Energy Directive.
