FTC Weighing Early Update to Children’s Online Privacy Rule

Rapidly changing technology is driving the Federal Trade Commission to consider updating a children’s online privacy rule ahead of schedule.

The FTC July 17 said it’s reviewing whether to revise the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule, which was last amended in 2013. Rule reviews are generally done every 10 years. The move comes as companies face increased pressure from lawmakers, regulators and consumers, via lawsuits, over how they collect and process children’s data.
