Tele-dentistry startup Byte has hired former Paul Hastings partner Meagan Olsen as its first general counsel and chief of staff.

Olsen joined the Los Angeles-based Byte, a unit of Dentsply Sirona Inc., in February after about eight years with Paul Hastings and one year with toy maker Mattel Inc., as senior counsel.

Byte, founded in 2017, provides at-home teeth straighteners for $85 a month. The company reported a 1,000% increase in sales in the first quarter of 2020, partially boosted by the Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on demand for telehealth.

In January, dental technology company Dentsply Sirona acquired Byte for over $1 billion. In a LinkedIn post announcing the deal, Byte president and CEO Neeraj Gunsagar called the acquisition a “giant step” in the company’s mission.

Olsen told Bloomberg Law in an email, “Byte’s tremendous growth and success have been driven by our belief that everyone deserves access to a brighter, straighter smile.”

Other companies like SmileDirectClub Inc., Align Technology Inc., and Candid Care Co. all offer similar teeth aligners, and many emphasize remote services.

But last December, a judge invalidated a SmileDirectClub business-model patent and dismissed the company’s lawsuit against rival Candid Care. SmileDirectClub was later granted a second patent for its SmileShop concept that allowed it to continue its lawsuit against Candid Care.

(Adds in last paragraph that SmileDirectClub was granted a second patent.)
