For the first time in the 19-year history of the Webby Awards, which honor “Excellence on the Internet,” a U.S. law firm is among the winners in the “People’s Voice” category.

Cooley won the People’s Voice Award for itsCooley GO website, which provides free, online resources for entrepreneurs with businesses at varying stages of the growth cycle. For instance, clients can click on a button to generate a package of documents necessary to incorporate their company in Delaware, and they also can browse articles about convertible debt, software patents and other topics.

WhileWebby winnersare selected by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, the People’s Voice winners are chosen by the online public.

Launched July 1, 2014, Cooley GO provides entrepreneurs with comprehensive legal and business guidance, insights on current marketplace trends and access to fundamental legal forms applicable to the establishment, growth and management of emerging and growth companies.

Peter Werner, one of the site’s curators and a partner in Cooley’s emerging company division, told Big Law Business the award gives the firm “a chance to be honored alongside our prototypical clients.”

Cooley GO blends design sensibilities geared to enhance the user interface experience with actionable content, Werner said; together these components show the firm’s customers, and potential clients, “we are as nimble as any start-up we represent.”

Werner said Cooley has been aggressive about adopting technology, believing that it’s in the company’s best interest “to be more like our clients.”

According to the Cooley GO site, lawyers from the firm see their clients at the food truck six percent of the time, and only see them at the client office ten percent of the time. The site also has information on the favorite coffee drink among the lawyers at the firm, broken down by office location, and other infographics about the diversity in terms of where its lawyers grew up.

Werner said the site benefits from “the input of hundreds of people” in the firm, with articles from partners and associates in Cooley’s practice areas worldwide.

A ceremony to honor the winners will be held in New York City on May 18.
