SEC enforcement activity declined in fiscal 2020 as the agency grappled with the coronavirus pandemic.
The Securities and Exchange Commission brought “over 700” enforcement actions in fiscal 2020, which ended Sept. 30, agency Chairman Jay Clayton said at Practising Law Institute’s annual SEC Speaks conference Thursday.
The agency’s annual enforcement tally was last below 800 in fiscal 2017, when 754 actions were filed, according to commission statistics. The numbers rose to 821 in fiscal 2018, and 862 in fiscal 2019.
