Hochul Expands Remote Court Hearing Access in New York City

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order on Tuesday to increase access to remote court hearings in New York City to help alleviate the ongoing crisis at Rikers Island.

The orderexpands the Criminal Procedure Law, giving the courts more discretion to conduct appearances virtually, which will expedite proceedings, Hochul announced in a news release. It applies to the counties of the Bronx, Kings, New York, Richmond, and Queens, and runs through Oct. 28 unless otherwise extended. The order comes as the state continues to battle with increased Covid-19 cases due largely to the delta variant.
