In Roman mythology, Janus is a god with two faces: one looking ahead and one looking behind. In U.S. labor law, Janus is shorthand for the Supreme Court ruling that placed right-to-work-style limits upon union fee collection in government workplaces. It’s been more than two years since the judicial Janus, and January’s release of annual Bureau of Labor Statistics data provides a look back at how public-sector unions have fared and offers a chance to look ahead at what may be in store.
