In-house legal departments understandably evaluate outside counsel on the quality of their work product, value of services rendered, efficiency, and price. However, these predictable categories are far from the only considerations.

Bloomberg Law survey data show that many legal departments also evaluate their outside counsel on both diversity and personal skills. Considering this input, law firms should emphasize professional interpersonal skills and promote meaningful diversity and inclusion, in addition to providing their clients with strong work product.
