Disbarred Attorney Escapes Debts For Victim Reimbursements

A former California attorney can use his personal bankruptcy to wipe out his obligation to reimburse the state bar for money the organization paid to victims of the lawyer’s wrongdoings, an appeals court ruled.

However, the former attorney must still pay back the bar for the costs of his disciplinary proceedings, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said in a decision issued Monday.
