Facebook Sues Two Companies Over Data Harvesting Operations

Facebook says it has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. against two companies that used scraping to engage in an international data harvesting operation.

  • Company says Israel-based BrandTotal Ltd. and Delaware-incorporated Unimania Inc. violated terms of service by scraping data from its platform as well as those of Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Amazon to sell “marketing intelligence” and other services
  • The firms relied on unauthorized automation to extract data from the platforms, Facebook said
  • Facebook says it will, in coming months, discuss some other measures it is using to proactively stop scraping
